Country Rugby League boss Terry Quinn wants at least two regional NRL games guaranteed each year as a replacement for the axed City-Country fixture.Quinn made the bittersweet announcement on Monday that the central-western NSW town of Mudgee would host the final instalment of the traditional NSW State of Origin audition next year.Penriths sponsored NRL clash in Bathurst is expected to be the only other game played at a country venue when the governing body releases its draw within the next week. With officials vague about their determination to take more top level league to the bush beyond City-Country, Quinn is calling for an assurance of country games in 2018.Ive had discussions with (NRL CEO) Todd Greenberg in his previous position and we discussed trying to get a guarantee of at least two competition games, possibly three if that was the case, depending on what the clubs want, Quinn told AAP.And place them strategically where theyre going to get the best bang for their buck. Keeping it in one spot, I dont think you can get the impact.Quinn, who was in favour of scrapping the City-Country game due to the growing number of player withdrawals each year, said the governing body also had to cover costs for games.Penrith are in the middle of a five-year contract to play at Bathursts Carrington Park where they have won two of three games.Dubbo, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Griffith, Lismore and Coffs Harbour are other venues Quinn believes also have the capacity. The benefits are left at the communities (involved) ... helping the junior fty clubs or the senior ftball clubs developing the game, he said. They cant just fly in, fly out either. Theyve got to spend a few days there doing some of the stuff like they do in City-Country week.Quinn said while the possibility of NRL games going bush was a gd trade-off, there was a romanticism that would die with the City-Country match.Out of the current NSW squad, theyve all had their start in City-Country games, which is quite phenomenal, he said.People can see their heroes, kids can touch them and realise theyre only human beings. It encourages development and growth for the game. From Scotland, to Gibraltar, to Ireland, to Kazakhstan, to Israel, to Australia, to the United Arab Emirates and finally, Spain. Its not a game of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, but two months in the life of Soccers star Tom Rogic. The Celtic midfielder has certainly had his fair share of stamps in the passport on the road to Perth, where hes in camp with the Soccers.Ive actually got to get a new one, Ive run out of rm, he said.Rogics international travels reflect his growing importance to his Scottish club, now coached by respected boss Brendan Rodgers. The ex-Liverpl coach has made Rogic a focal point of his midfield in the first two months of his season, leading to European Champions League qualifiers in Gibraltar, Kazakhstan and Israel.Their successful campaign has placed more European nights on Celtics calendar, with Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Munchengladbach ties to come.Hes already played the Spanish superclub in a pre-season friendly in Ireland.Ever the professional, the 23-year-old has given no thought to pinching himself at playing on the grandest stage.Theyre big names and big teams but its just who we wwere drawn against, he said.ddddddddddddIn my opinion its definitely the pinnacle of club ftball. Its about making sure were ready for those matches and enjoying it because were not there to make up the numbers. From Celtics pre-season through to the Confederations Cup next June, Rogic estimates he could play up to 70 matches this season but hes not about to reduce his Soccers commitments. Its not something Ive ever thought about - pulling out - and nor do I want to, he said.Im feeling gd. Im more than happy to be here ... you take it as a massive compliment and honour. But it doesnt really stop. After the Iraq match on Thursday night, Rogic and the national team travel to Abu Dhabi for a match against United Arab Emirates. And the two games that await him when he returns from Soccers duty?Weve got an Old Firm match (against Glasgow rivals Rangers) when we get back on Saturday and then Barcelona away on the Tuesday, he said. Its all a bit crazy at the moment but Im certainly loving it and long may it continue.
