The biggest obstacle in New Zealands path to a first ever Test series win over South Africa is the oppositions pace pack, according to coach Mike Hesson. From a seam bowling point of view, they are strong, they have got a lot of variety, Hesson said in Durban. They have some bounce bowlers, some gd swing bowlers, some seam bowlers so that will provide its own challenges.New Zealand are fresh off a 2-0 sweep over Zimbabwe, where their batsmen profited from time in the middle but were not always challenged by a hardworking but tame attack. Donald Tiripano, Michael Chinouya, Chamu Chibhabha and Prince Masvaure all bowled around 130kphs and slower, did not find movement or bounce and offered regular freebies. Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Kyle Abbott, Wayne Parnell or Chris Morris are not expected to be as generous.South Africas six seamers, of which three are likely to play, are known for swing, seam movement and speed. Even though they have not competed in a Test match in nearly seven months and two of the three first-choice picks - Philander and Steyn - missed most of last summer with injuries, Hesson expects them to pose a serious threat to his line-up.Vernon has played a lot of cricket recently so he has got loads of overs under his belt. He is a high quality bowler. We saw him at his best a few years ago. He hits lovely lengths and we know he is going to provide a challenge there, most likely with the new ball, Hesson said, referring to Philanders outings with the South African A team. Philander travelled to Zimbabwe and Australia where he was his usual miserly self, although he did not lead the wicket-takers list.Philanders hauls in the last two years have decreased significantly from when his career began. But New Zealand will remember his 21 against them in the series in 2012, of which 10 came in the Hamilton Test South Africa won, and his seven in the Newlands match a year later. They will be wary of his ability to tempt batsmen outside the off stump, to create uncertainty with subtle movement and if nothing else, to hold his end while his team-mates attack. It is most likely those team-mates will be Steyn and Rabada, and Hesson mentioned both as men New Zealand would watching out for. In terms of Kagiso Rabada, he has got pace, bounce and skill and he is fresh so he keeps running in at you hard. He is someone we are going to have to spend a bit of time on. We know he is a quality bowler. And then when youve got Dale Steyn at the other end, there is no let off.New Zealand will draw inspiration from their recent form - they batted three times in the two-match series in Zimbabwe, registered six centuries and were not bowled out in any of their innings - but remain cautious that run-scoring wont be as simple in South Africa as it was in Bulawayo. We recognise that the surfaces there (Zimbabwe) are significantly different than they are here, Hesson said. What they dont know is exactly how different. There has never been a first-class match played at Kingsmead in August before so nobody knows what to expect from early season conditions. Durban does not get as cold as the rest of South Africa in winter, neither does it get as dry as the inland of the country, so it is unlikely to be t fresh a pitch. It may even take some turn, as it did during a limited-overs series played last August, which New Zealand were part of. If it does, they have come prepared. It depends how dry the wicket is. If we think its going to turn - it turned during the one-dayers last year - we might play two spinners, Hesson said. We wouldnt be afraid playing two spinners, if we felt that it was going to be dry and turn. That was New Zealands strategy in Zimbabwe where they fielded both Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner to back up a three-pronged pace pack comprising Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner. Wickets were spread among them with Wagner topping the charts with 11 scalps and Sodhi (eight), Boult and Santner and Southee (six each) not far behind. On unresponsive surfaces, the five-man attack combined to take 20 wickets twice and win the series. With that in mind, it may turn out that the biggest obstacle between South Africa defending an unbeaten record that has stretched back 14 series from 1931, and New Zealand, is the oppositions pace pack. Shoes Black Friday Deals 2020 OAKLAND, Calif. -- Yoenis Cespedes struck out lking in his first at-bat, then quickly regained the stroke that has made him such a central part of the Athletics lineup. On a day when Oaklands pitching wasnt crisp, the Cuban sluggers timing couldnt have been better. Cespedes had three hits and matched his career high with four RBIs on his most productive day since winning the Home Run Derby, and the As rallied from five runs down to beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-6 on Sunday. "Ive been working a lot, every single day, to try to get the swing that I got today," Cespedes said. "I didnt feel really well in the first at-bat but after that I started to feel comfortable." Cespedes snapped an 0-for-13 funk with a two-run double in the third inning, added an RBI single in the fifth and then doubled in Josh Donaldson as part of a five-run sixth. It was Cespedes first game with multiple RBIs since June 21. Eric Sogard added three hits and two RBIs, and Brandon Moss also drove in a pair for Oakland. The As (62-43) moved a season-high 19 games over .500 and extended their lead to six games over Texas in the AL West. "That was big," manager Bob Melvin said. "Weve had some guys struggling, and then someone else shows up ... and then someone else shows up. We still have some guys struggling, but we manage to either get just enough or keep adding on like today." Erick Aybar doubled and tripled for the Angels, who placed Albert Pujols on the disabled list before the game with a tear in his left ft that could end his season. The As tk two of the first three games in this series primarily on the strength of their starting pitching. They got a big bst from their offence in the finale and a little help from the Angels defence along the way. Cespedes provided the biggest lift with his third three-hit game of the season. He went down lking in his first at-bat before his double in the third helped jump-start Oaklands comeback from a 5-0 deficit. He later hit a towering popup in the fifth that landed for an RBI single when Angels centre fielder Mike Trout lost it in the sun. The ball fell between Trout and right fielder Kole Calhoun as Moss scored from first with the tying run. "You cant catch what you cant see," Trout said. "I had a gd (read) on it but the last three or four steps it just went away. I couldnt do anything about it." Trout had more fielding problems in the sixth after the Angels went up 6-5 on Aybars double. Stephen Vogt hit a sinking fly to centre that bounced in front of Trout just as he nearly collided with Josh Hamilton racing over from left field.dddddddddddd The ball landed in front of the two outfielders and rolled to the warning track as both players fell to the turf. Seth Smith scored on the play to tie it 6-all. Sogard followed with a single off reliever J.C. Gutierrez (0-2) to drive in Vogt with the go-ahead run, then scored on Jed Lowries RBI double to give the As an 8-6 lead. Moss and Cespedes also had RBIs in the inning. "This team knows better than anybody that we have a great shot of making a run and coming back there," said Sogard, who extended his career-high hitting streak to seven games. "Sure enough we made it happen. Pitching wasnt there in the beginning and the bats picked it up, but pitching was there later and shut them down." Jesse Chavez (2-2) worked two innings for the win. The Angels lost for the seventh time in nine road games and fell a season-high 13 games out of first place. Before the game, manager Mike Scioscia announced that Pujols had been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn plantar fascia, an injury that has bothered him most of the season. He aggravated it while running out a single in the ninth inning of Fridays 6-4 loss to Oakland. "This is something that, talking to Albert, has been going on for six or seven years," Scioscia said. "Its been going on for a long time and hes managed it. This is a big blow to our team right now." Although surgery seems unlikely, Scioscia did not rule out Pujols being sidelined the remainder of the season. The news didnt get any better on the field. Tommy Hanson was staked to a five-run lead after two innings but struggled with his command and was gone in the fifth. Hanson struck out five and allowed four hits but walked five -- three of which scored. Oakland starter Jarrod Parker wasnt much better. He walked a career-high seven, but the As got him off the hk. The Angels jumped on Parker early when they scored four times and sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning. Howie Kendrick and Mark Trumbo both drove in runs, and Alberto Callaspo added a two-run single. After Aybar tripled leading off the second, Kendrick hit into a fielders choice to make it 5-0.
