You have to give Tennessee credit, especially for playing so strong at the end, but these girls werent going to let this one go without getting a win.Evie Grace Singleton, Emily Hill and Jelena Vujcin continued to fuel the MSU attack as they have all season. Singleton led all Bulldogs with 12 kills, while Hill and Vujcin each turned in 10.Vujcin and Singleton were the keys to the Bulldogs opening set victory, as 6 of Vujcins 10 kills came in the opener, while Singleton turned in 4. Play was tight until a 5-1 run pushed the Vols into a 14-11 lead and forced a State timeout. Tennessee would maintain a three-point lead until a Chelsea Duhs kill kickstarted a Bulldog run that would push them ahead for gd. UT would use one more run to draw within a point, but back-to-back kills from Vujcin sealed the deal as State went on to a 26-24 first set win.The second set played much like the first, with a back-and-forth tone early on. This time State would lean on Singleton, as she paced the squad with 5 kills in the set. Vujcin and Singleton would spark a 7-1 run with consecutive kills and State would hold off another late UT rally to go into intermission with a 2-0 lead in the match, winning the second frame 25-23.From there it was all Marn and White, as Hills 4 kills led a Bulldog third set attack that the Vols could not keep up with. MSU would push its lead to as much as nine, up 19-10, before Tennessee would make one final attempt to get back in the match. UT would get as close as two, fighting off four State match points and forcing the visitors to call for timeout. However, that would be all it wrote for UT, as Vujcin sealed the match with her 10th kill, giving MSU the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.Sophomore Blossom Sato paced the Dogs in assists with 24 and digs with a season-high 12. In Not Out!, Sekhri seeks to do precisely this, or, as he describes it, to tell us the incredible story of the Indian Premier League.As a contemporary history of the IPLs nine seasons, the bk serves as a fine resource. It captures neatly the underlying facts, from the sources of revenue that allowed the IPL to be established, to the various controversies that have plagued it, including lesser known issues, such as one to do with the payment of facilitation fees for broadcast rights, which ultimately required the Supreme Courts intervention.However, in spite of chronicling the IPLs history in fairly lucid detail, Sekhri fails to question the ethos that pervades the tournament. The bk rather takes the commercialisation of the sport for granted. It even begins with a curious assertion that put simply, the IPL is an entity that is fashionable to dislike, but at the same time, is a regrettable necessity for Indian society. Over the course of the bk, though, we find no evidence to back up this claim: that the IPL is t popular to just be a fad, and has t many legitimate corporates investing in it to simplly be labelled a racket doesnt quite do enough to explain to us why the league does us a service.dddddddddddd To Sekhris credit, though, in a well-tuned chapter he shows us how the IPL differs from other professional sports leagues, and also offers reasonable suggestions on how it may benefit from adopting some of their best practices. The bk also contains a significant chapter in which he lays out the several issues of conflict of interest that the IPL has been repeatedly bogged down by. And he presents to us clearly the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Lodha committee, which, he says, if implemented, could have long lasting repercussions for the IPL as we know it.Sekhris suggestion for how the BCCI could circumvent court-mandated regulation, however, is curious. He endorses greater privatisation through a model in which the IPLs commercial rights could be assigned to a separate private entity under the larger control of the BCCI.Sekhri is at his best when he describes measures and laws that could beef up integrity in sport. One such example that he provides is the draft Prevention of Sporting Fraud bill that was introduced in 2013. Despite sport in India being a state subject, for something as far-reaching and potentially harmful to sport in the country, central legislation in the national interest will be the inarguable solution, he writes. As he rightly points out, the existing criminal-justice mechanisms are either t onerous (such as the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, which was invoked against cricketers charged with spot-fixing in the IPL) or plainly obsolete (the Public Gambling Act) to be of any use. A designated sports fraud law, Sekhri writes, could, on the other hand, restore an element of credibility to cricket in that it would contain a framework of rules that are sui generis to sport.For those undoubting of the IPLs contribution to sport, as to those more sceptical of its inherent values, Sekhris bk offers a useful reminder of the facts that underscore the various arguments.Not Out!
