The first time San Diego State was nationally ranked this season, the Aztecs responded by playing their worst game of the season.San Diego State is now back in the rankings at No. 24 and will seek a better result when it travels to play Wyoming in Mountain West play on Saturday (30 p.m., CBS Sports Network). The earlier ranking marked the first time the Aztecs had been nationally ranked since 1995. Living up to the billing proved difficult as South Alabama rolled to a 42-24 win over San Diego State. The Aztecs quickly fell out of the rankings and have since responded with six consecutive victories. This time, the players feel more comfortable having nationally ranked tagged to their program. That was just a tough game. We had some bad luck in that one, senior defensive end Kyle Kelley said of the South Alabama loss at Tuesdays press conference. We dont take into account the rankings that much. Were just worried about the (Wyoming) game itself. I dont really care if we are ranked right now. It all depends if we are ranked at the end of the year. Thats my main goal.San Diego State (9-1, 6-0) has already clinched the Pacific Division of the Mountain West and will play in the conference title game. Continue to win and the Aztecs will have a chance at landing a spot in the Cotton Bowl.Aztecs coach Rocky Long said those goals mean more to him than being ranked. Our team wants to win the conference championship, Long said. Im sure they are happy that we are back in the Top 25, even though I told them that it doesnt matter until the end of the season. Our motivation is that we want to win the rest of the games because there are a lot of gd things that can happen after the season if we can win them all. We might get to play in a New Years Day bowl game, wed be the conference champions. There are incentives out there.Wyoming has its own dose of incentive this week as it continues pursuit of winning the conferences Mountain Division. The Cowboys (7-3, 5-1) are tied for first place with Boise State and New Mexico but hurt their chances with last Saturdays 69-66 triple-overtime loss to UNLV.It was a game that came down to a play here or there, Wyoming coach Craig Bohl said. There certainly were a lot of plays in the ballgame -- some really gd and some not so gd.I think its important that we move forward and hang together as a ftball team. And as coaches, there are a lot of things that weve got to clean up within a short week. One area in which the Cowboys will need to be strong is defending the run as San Diego State rushed for a schl-record 474 yards in last Saturdays 46-16 victory over Nevada.Aztecs senior running back Donnel Pumphrey leads the nation with 1,779 rushing yards and moved into fourth place in FBS history with 6,051 yards.Pumphrey needs 32 yards to move past third-place Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh) and is also moving within range of second-place Ricky Williams (6,279) of Texas and record-holder Ron Dayne (6,397) of Wisconsin. He also is tied for ninth on the all-time rushing touchdowns list with 59.Pumphrey rushed for 198 yards in the victory over Nevada and wasnt even the leading rusher on his team. Junior Rashaad Penny topped him by rushing for a career-best 208 yards.Wyoming also features a standout back in junior Brian Hill, who ranks third in the nation with 1,417 yards. Hill stands third in Mountain West history with 3,844 career rushing yards but could find running rm to be a challenge against the Aztecs, who rank second nationally in rushing defense (86.4 yards per game).Cowboys sophomore quarterback Josh Allen passed for a career-best 334 yards and four touchdowns in the loss to UNLV -- which was the third-highest scoring game in FBS history. Allen has passed for 2,218 yards and 21 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.Senior wideout Tanner Gentry is also having solid season with 53 receptions for 962 yards and a conference-leading 11 touchdowns.Sophomore free safety Andrew Wingard leads the Wyoming defense with 99 tackles. Sophomore strong safety Marcus Epps, sophomore cornerback Antonio Hull and redshirt freshman weakside linebacker Logan Wilson share the team leadership with three interceptions apiece.Standout San Diego State senior cornerback Damontae Kazee has five interceptions this season and holds the schl career mark of 15.The Aztecs rushed for 293 yards while rolling to a 38-3 victory over Wyoming last season. NBA officials ruled the court unplayable in the Bucks final exhibition game on Oct. 25 because players were slipping, and the game was cancelled midway through the first period. The Phoenix Coyotes four-year ownership saga is over. The papers are signed. The NHL has approved the deal. The teams fans, players and front office can finally relax. "Today is about turning our collective focus to the strong future of the Coyotes here in Arizona and clearly stop talking about ownership questions," Anthony LeBlanc, the Coyotes new CEO and alternate governor, said Tuesday at Jobing.com Arena. "Its time to stop talking about arena leases, its time to stop talking about financing options and where the team will play next year, and to focus on what is important to all of us, and that is what happens on the ice." The Coyotes completed an arduous process to find an owner on Monday, when LeBlanc, George Gosbee and the rest of IceArizona completed their purchase of the franchise from the NHL. The leagues Board of Governors then approved the sale to the Canadian investors, triggering a 15-year, $225 million lease agreement for Jobing.com Arena between the City of Glendale and Renaissance and Sports Entertainment, IceArizonas managing partner. The official announcement came on Tuesday, with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman joining Gosbee, LeBlanc, members of the Glendale city council -- the four who voted in favour of the lease agreement -- and employees from across the Coyotes organization, including general manager Don Maloney and defenceman Derek Morris. "This is a day that we believed since the beginning of all these proceedings four years ago should take place because it would be the right thing for the great fans that we have here in the Valley of the Sun," Bettman said. "Its important and has been important to the City of Glendale. And it was important to the National Hockey League, because we always believed in this market." Now its up to IceArizona to make it work in a market that tends to be winner-driven. A big step is keeping the Coyotes competitive. Even when Phoenix reached the playoffs the first two years without an owner, support fluctuated, from half-capacity crowds at Jobing.com Arena at times during the regular season to raucous support once the post-season started. The Coyotes showed what the Phoenix market could be like two years ago, when they used a blue-collar mentality to make a late-season push ttoward their first division title in 33 years as an NHL franchise.dddddddddddd The desert dogs brought fans along with them on the bandwagon as they kept winning, becoming the darlings of the Valley as they marched toward the Western Conference finals for the first time. The NHL lockout, which stretched into January, dampened some of the Coyotes momentum last season and an inconsistent performance, one that left them four points short of the Wests final playoff spot, didnt help. Even before its deal was complete, RSE started taking steps toward making the Coyotes better. Maloney, assistant general manager Brad Treliving and coach Dave Tippett, along with his staff, all signed long-term deals to stay. Goalie Mike Smith, who had been hesitant to sign with ownership up in the air, signed a five-year deal before Glendales city council had approved the lease agreement. Once the lease was done, IceArizona lsened the purse strings a bit for Maloney and the front office, allowing them to make a big free-agent splash by signing top-line forward Mike Ribeiro. And, as the franchise moves forward, the new ownership group has vowed to give the Coyotes more financial flexibility. Phoenix still wont be one of the top-spending teams in the NHL, but itll certainly have more resources available than it did before. "Were definitely planning to increase the player payroll and were going to increase it year over year, but the reality is were not a club that plans to spend to the ceiling," LeBlanc said. "With Don Maloneys stewardship of the franchise, we expect to continue making this a very exciting, very competitive hockey team." The new ownership group also will try to expand the fan base. The teams name will be changed to the Arizona Coyotes sometime after next season and IceArizona will work to expand the franchises marketing efforts, something that had been limited while it was being run by the NHL. "For the first time in years with this franchise, theres no question it will be tied to Arizona; we have gd, strong local ownership," LeBlanc said. "Quite frankly, it will be bts to the ground marketing of getting this product out." It should be easier now that the biggest step -- securing an owner -- is out of the way. ' ' '
