The Big Ten will play six Friday night ftball games a year starting in 2017 and continuing through at least 2022, the conference announced Wednesday. Not every schl wants to host those games, though. The Friday night games are being added to the conferences television agreements with ESPN/ABC and Fox, Senior Associate Commissioner Mark Rudner said. No team will play more than one Friday night home game a year. The Big Ten already has had Friday night games on Labor Day weekend. Those games will continue and be counted among the six each year. Iowa and Nebraska play each other the day after Thanksgiving in a game that wont count among the six.Penn State announced it wouldnt play at home on a Friday night, and Michigan has said no to playing home or away.We fully support the Big Tens scheduling decisions as well as conference peers who are able to play on Friday nights, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said. With our large fan base, Michigan fans and alumni travel significant distances to attend games, making Saturdays our preferred day for all ftball games.Ohio State is willing to host once every three years, but only when the Friday falls during fall break on the academic calendar. Iowa, Michigan State and Rutgers dont want to host except on Labor Day weekend. Wisconsin would be open to playing at home on Labor Day weekend in selected years, athletic director Barry Alvarez said.Nebraska and Indiana have agreed to host once every three years. Maryland had no comment. It does create additional opportunities for certain programs that heretofore have not had that kind of national prime-time exposure on Saturday night to maybe have that on Friday night, Rudner said.Among those are Illinois, Northwestern and Purdue, which say theyre on board with hosting Friday night games. There are traditionalists who say Friday is for high schl ftball, but if we can get our product out there on national television when all eyes are on us, thats great for Purdue, Boilermakers spokesman Matthew Rector said.Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle wrote in an email to The Associated Press, We will play the schedule assigned to us by the Big Ten.The Big Ten plans to announce the 2017 Friday night schedule within the next four to seven days.To give schls adequate time to address logistical challenges, the Friday night games will be announced in early October of the preceding year. The 2018 Friday games, for example, will be announced in October 2017.Friday night college ftball has become more common in recent years. There were 53 games on that night in 2014, 63 in 2015 and 65 this year. The Big 12, Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast Conference are among the leagues that play some games on Fridays.Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson, noting the importance of high schl ftball across the state, said his schl would agree only to an occasional home day game on the Friday following Thanksgiving.Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour said significant operational issues make Friday night ftball in Happy Valley a no go. Barbour pointed out that fans generally travel more than an hour to get to the stadium. She also said shutting down the schl on a Friday was not an option.Illinois spokesman Kent Brown said coach Lovie Smith and the ftball office emailed high schl ftball coaches in the state explaining the situation. There is no sacred day of the week for any sports event anymore, Brown said, noting a lot of high schls play on Saturdays.Rudner said Delany called the executive directors of the state high schl athletic associations in each of the 11 Big Ten states to personally explain the conferences decision.Wisconsin Ftball Coaches Association President Tony Biolo said his organization is opposed to the Big Tens plan.Friday nights to me has just been about the high schl portion of it, and sort of let our kids be the star attraction that night, Biolo said.Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said even though his schl agreed to host Friday night games on a limited basis, the Big Tens move was necessary to increase exposure. We avoided it for years, Smith said. We thought we could do it in a limited way, which is why we established some parameters around it.---AP College Ftball Writer Ralph D. CHICAGO - Turning shot after shot aside in the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup Finals history, Corey Crawford kept telling himself one thing. "…make the next stop and were going to score the next one," said an exhausted 28-year-old following a 51-save performance, which included 29 stops in the marathon of three overtimes. "Just over and over, thats how I felt and thats how I thought the whole time." Thirty-eight seconds after his final stop of the evening on Tyler Seguin, Crawford was finally rewarded. At the 52-minute mark of a furious third overtime frame, Andrew Shaw ended Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Blackhawks determined comeback at long last complete. "Obviously emotions are high," said Shaw of the 4-3 victory, his pesky performance also including a helper and all kinds of agitation, "but t exhausted right now to express it." The instantly historic winner proved the only innocuous moment from Shaw all evening, but the one that would matter most. It would take a fateful point blast from Michal Rozsival to initiate the effort, a shot that was redirected by Dave Bolland before ricocheting off the leg of the Chicago disturber. "The bigger the stage, the bigger the challenge, he rises to the occasion," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said of the 2011 fifth round pick. "He knows where the front of the net is. It doesnt have to be pretty. Hes a warrior. Hes one of those guys you appreciate, you love that hes on your side, hes relentless." Persistence from the Belleville, Ontario native would reap rewards at points earlier in the Blackhawks push from an early and potentially dming 3-1 third period deficit. Fewer than two minutes after Patrice Bergeron had re-upped the Bruins lead to two did Shaw pick off the long-range breakout attempt of Torey Krug, dishing to Bolland for Chiicagos second goal.dddddddddddd Agitating antics opposite Zdeno Chara would also prove meaningful, the Boston captain whistled for a retaliatory high-stick in the third. "I think you could ask players on other teams and theyll tell you that hes not the type of guy they like to play against," Jonathan Toews declared after the endless action. "But thats what we love about him. "Hes not afraid. You saw him going up against Chara tonight; hes probably the guy on our team that got up against him the most, hit him, std him up a little bit, drew a penalty and scored a huge goal. "Big game by this guy," Toews concluded of Shaw, sitting to his right at the victorious post-game podium. Nearby the Bruins were stung by the defeat of a game that was in their grasp. "Weve got to do a better job of not even letting it come to that," said Milan Lucic of the lost lead, scoring twice and adding an assist alongside David Krejci and Nathan Horton, the top line of the postseason a force yet again. A worrisome sign for the Eastern Conference champs, Horton left the game late in the first frame of extra-time with an undisclosed injury. He and his teammates had a stream of chances to win it throughout overtime before Shaw did the job - including a pair of power-plays - but were turned aside time and time again by Crawford, who had outdueled Rask by the evenings conclusion. "We had some great lks, we had some great opportunities, we just didnt bury them," Bruins coach Claude Julien said mournfully. This chunk of early adversity, he noted, would not rattle his battle-tested club however. "Last time we won the Cup we lost the first two games to Vancouver," recalled Julien of the 2011 Final, which was gripped by Boston in seven games, "it never stopped us from coming back and this certainly wont."
